Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the Philippines, with Cebu City as the main center of commerce, trade, education, and industry in the central, and southern islands of the Visayas. It has five-star hotels, casinos, white sand beaches, world-class golf courses, convention centers, and shopping malls. The UK-based Condé Nast Traveler Magazine named Cebu the seventh best island destination in the Indian Ocean-Asia region in 2007, eighth best Asian-Pacific island destination in 2005, and seventh in 2004.

Cebu's attractions do not only cater to the itinerant sun-worshipper or beach-lover. The business traveler to this bustling port of call may not have time for more than a day's trip around town. Still, Cebu's cityscapes have their own brand of cosmopolitan charm touched with a unique island warmth. Luxurious accommodations, complete sports facilities, cuisines from the native to the exotic, vibrant nightlife : Cebu will not be found wanting in all the amenities of a growing, booming metropolis.

(pop., 2000: 718,821), capital of Cebu province, Philippines. Located on the eastern coast of Cebu Island, it is the oldest Spanish city in the Philippines. It possesses an excellent harbour, sheltered by Mactan Island. Attracted by Cebu's focal position, Ferdinand Magellan landed there in 1521 and converted the ruler to Christianity; in a later war expedition on the ruler's behalf, Magellan was killed on Mactan Island. Occupied by Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565, it was until 1571 the capital of Spanish possessions in the Philippines. It remained the primary Spanish bastion in the south and had prominent roles in insurrections against both Spain and the U.S. Having recovered from heavy damage sustained in World War II, Cebu City is now a cultural and commercial centre.
